Canada Tibet Committee calls on government to act on Urumqi protest
(Montreal, Monday, 6 July 2009) – The Canada Tibet Committee (CTC) today called on the Canadian government to intervene immediately with the Chinese government and ensure that an impartial and independent investigation is launched over events in Urumqi that have reportedly led to 140 deaths after a peaceful protest turned violent on Sunday.
“The federal government must state in the strongest of possible terms to their Chinese counterparts that the use of violence and arbitrary arrests against those taking part in peaceful protests must cease,” said CTC Executive Director Dermod Travis. “Yesterday’s events are another tragic reminder that the Chinese government’s policy of repressing democratic aspirations has failed miserably.”
The CTC called on the Chinese government to allow free access to the region for foreign journalists and international observers and to use restraint in the current situation, allowing for peaceful protests to take place in accordance with international law
The Canada Tibet Committee is an independent non-governmental organisation of Tibetans and non-Tibetans living in Canada, who are concerned about the continuing human rights violations and lack of democratic freedom in Tibet.
