Canada Tibet Committee welcomes new Executive Director

June 14, 2012

(Montreal, 14 June 2012) – The Board of Directors of the Canada Tibet Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of Carole Samdup as its new Executive Director.

Carole has a lengthy record of service to the Tibetan community in Canada and internationally. Having spent several years in Tibetan refugee communities in India, Carole returned to Canada and worked for the Tibetan Cultural Association of Quebec.

She was a founding member of the Canada Tibet Committee in 1987 and served on its executive committee until 2002.

In 2000 she was elected as the first Co-Chair of the International Tibet Network (ITN) which now boasts more than 180 organizational members worldwide.

For the past eighteen years, Carole has worked at the International Centre for Human Rights & Democratic Development in Montreal. In that capacity she travelled extensively and participated in numerous UN processes and civil society-led investigative missions including to Tibet. Carole is the author of several articles on Tibet and on economic and social rights.

Carole replaces Dermod Travis who has led the Canada Tibet Committee since 2007. The Board of Directors extends its thanks to Dermod for his dedicated service and excellent work initiating key projects that have helped to shape the organization. Dermod will remain close to the Tibetan issue as an active member of the Project Tibet Society which is overseeing a recently-launched Tibetan immigration program to Canada. We wish him every success in his new endeavours.

The Canada Tibet Committee is an independent, non-governmental organization of Tibetans and non-Tibetans living in Canada, concerned with the continuing human rights violations and lack of democratic freedom in Tibet.
