Tibetan National Uprising Day in Canada

Political Leader issues “2020 Proposal” to Tibetans

Rallies, demonstrations planned for across Canada

March 10, 2013 - As Tibetans and their supporters around the world and in cities across Canada rally to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the 1959 uprising against Chinese armed forces, Tibet’s political leader announced his “2020 Proposal” to Tibetans in exile.  The proposal urges young Tibetans to assume leadership roles in the community and to build bridges with their countrymen inside Tibet. [1]

As a long-term strategy we need to build self-reliance in the Tibetan world, in thought and action”, said Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay. “Our 50-year-old movement cannot depend solely on others to help us achieve our goals. It is time to assume leadership and stand on our own feet.”

“For more than half a century, we have witnessed the steadfast determination and resilience of the Tibetan people”, commented Carole Samdup, Executive Director of the Canada Tibet Committee.  “Canadians across this country will continue to press our government for political support for the Tibetan people.”

Around the world, March 10 is commemorated by rallies, vigils and demonstrations. In Canada, events will honour the 126 Tibetans who have self-immolated since 2009 [2].  March 10 will also mark the start of Canada Tibet Lobby Days when a broad coalition of organizations will reach out to Canadian Members of Parliament in an effort to generate all-party support for the Tibetan cause.
