CTC welcomes MP Bernard Trottier as new Chair of the Canadian Parliamentary Friends of Tibet

June 12, 2014

June 12, 2014 - The Canada Tibet Committee is pleased to welcome MP Bernard Trottier as the newly selected Chair of the Canadian Parliamentary Friends of Tibet (PFT).  Mr. Trottier replaces MP David Sweet who has chaired the group since 2012.

Bernard Trottier, an active PFT member for several years, represents the Toronto riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore where the number of Tibetan residents has increased significantly in recent years. The Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre is also located in Trottier's riding.

"When we launched the PFT in 1990, we hoped it would serve as a non-partisan coordinating body for Tibet advocacy in the Canadian parliament", said Carole Samdup, Executive Director of the Canada Tibet Committee.  "Now, almost 25 years later, we are inspired that dedicated parliamentarians remain committed to that objective and we look forward to working closely with Mr. Trottier as he assumes his leadership role."

PFT co-chairs remain unchanged - MP Peggy Nash (NDP) and Hon. Irwin Cotler (LIB).

The PFT seeks to strengthen Canadian government support for a just and principled policy approach to the issue of Tibet. The PFT collaborates with similar parliamentary groups around the world and is an active supporter of the International Network of Parliamentarian on Tibet.
