China warns against using Tibet issue to meddle in its affairs

September 21, 2007

Beijing, Sept. 20 (PTI): China today protested a visit by the Dalai Lama
to Germany and cautioned foreign governments against meddling in its
internal affairs using the Tibet issue.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said China had protested to
Germany over allowing the Tibetan spiritual leader to visit the country
and meet with German leaders, including Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"We have expressed our solemn position to Germany," she said, adding
that the Dalai Lama was using religion to further his political agenda
to split Tibet from China.

"We are against his splittist activities. We also oppose any country or
individual who uses the Tibet issue as a means to meddle in China's
internal affairs," she said when asked to comment on the Dalai's
scheduled meeting with Merkel on September 23.

On Tuesday, China had urged Germany not to allow the Dalai Lama to visit
the country in order to preserve cordial Sino-German relations. Jiang
said China is opposed to any contact of officials of foreign countries
with the Tibetan leader on any pretext.

"Tibet is a part of Chinese territory since ancient times. Tibetan
affairs are China internal affairs," Jiang had asserted.
