CTC welcomes announcement that Canadian Ambassador to China recently visited Tibet

November 4, 2013

Montreal, October 31, 2013 – Today’s announcement that Canadian Ambassador to China, Guy Saint-Jacques, recently visited Tibet is welcome news for Tibet supporters.  The announcement came in a speech by Minister John Baird on the occasion of the John Diefenbaker Award presented earlier today in Vancouver.

No details about the Ambassador's human rights discussions with officials in Tibet were provided.

“Given the deteriorating human rights situation in Tibet, scrutiny by the international community is not only welcome but necessary” said Carole Samdup, Executive Director of the Canada Tibet Committee.  “China’s crackdown on fundamental freedoms and human rights must be challenged by the international community.”

The Canada Tibet Committee has consistently called for an investigative mission to Tibet by Canadian government officials.  Last week, Canada joined other western countries in calling for an end to human rights violations in Tibet during a UN review of China’s human rights record.  China will respond to the recommendations in March.
