"We Tibetans are looking for a legitimate and meaningful autonomy, an arrangement that would enable Tibetans to live within the framework of the People’s Republic of China."

Special Envoy to the Dalai Lama to Speak at National Press Club

October 12, 2007

For Immediate Release, October 10, 2007

Washington - Special Envoy to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lodi Gyaltsen
Gyari, will speak Friday, October 12 at 10 a.m. at the National Press
Club about the foreign policy implications of the visit of the Dalai
Lama to Washington next week. The Dalai Lama will be in DC to receive
the Congressional Gold Medal at a major ceremony hosted by the House
Speaker and attended by the U.S. President, representing the first time
the President has met the Dalai Lama in a public forum.

Lodi Gyari, who is based in Washington, is the lead person designated by
the Dalai Lama to engage in talks about Tibet’s future with China. He
will give an update on the current dialogue process and a general
briefing on next week’s visit as well as speaking about a current
crackdown and political campaign against the Dalai Lama in eastern Tibet.

The timing of the visit coincides with the opening of China's National
Party Congress, a critical forum for setting the agenda of the Party's
policies and consolidating its leadership. It is also a time of
increased scrutiny on China by the United States.

Lodi Gyari, a senior reincarnate lama, was born into a nomadic family in
Nyarong, Eastern Tibet in 1949. Mr Gyari’s parents were involved in the
resistance against the Chinese invasion of Tibet in the 1950s, and in
1959, following the escape of the Dalai Lama from Tibet, the family fled
into exile in India. Realising that the Tibetans needed to publicise
their cause to the world, Lodi Gyari became an editor for various
Tibetan journals and one of the founding members of the Tibetan Youth
Congress. He served in various Parliamentary and Ministerial roles in
the Tibetan government in exile before his appointment as the Dalai
Lama’s Special Envoy based in Washington, DC. Lodi Gyari is also the
Executive Chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet.
