"I believe that to meet the challenges of our times, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. It is the foundation for world peace."

POEM: POTALA

September 15, 2008

By Tsoltim N. Shakabpa

Potala
Built by human hands
Guided by saints
Rises from God's earth
To touch the heavenly sky
Its golden roofs
Glittering in the sun
Shining hope on the hopeless
Its thousand windows
Shimmering in the moonlight
Look over the city of Lhasa
Shedding tears of sorrow
With dreams of glory
For its people robbed of freedom

O Potala!
Father of our parents
Mother of our children
Home of our god kings
Symbol of holiness
Pray for the return
Of the mighty Lord
Who sat upon your golden throne
And spread compassion
Throughout the land
Wash away this sadness
That pervades us all
And blow away the dark clouds
That cast an ominous shadow upon our land

O Potala!
Behold the sky above that watches over you
The soil below that firmly holds you
The air around that refreshes you
Even nature emerges to defend and sustain you
Lift your golden roofs to the magnificent sky above
Stand solidly on the soil below
Which through the years
Have supported you upright
Through your thousand windows
Breathe in the sweet air
And rejuvenate
The city called God's Earth
That warmly embraces you

O Potala!
Monument to the Gods
Seat of the Dalai Lamas
Symbol of Tibet's freedom
The rightful heirs
To your throne will return
The butter lamps
Will brightly burn again
And your rooms will be filled
With the aroma of incense
The sound of prayers
Will flow from your hallowed halls
Once again bringing peace
Throughout the joyous land
