The Dalai Lama has accepted an invitation to attend the 2009 World
Winter Games as a guest.
Local games officials said they are working with Special Olympics
International and the Dalai Lama's team. A more formal announcement with
additional detail is forthcoming, officials said.
The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games is scheduled for Feb. 7-13
throughout southwestern Idaho.
The event is expected to bring up to 3,000 athletes from more than 100
countries.
Organizers have had only two years to hire enough staff, recruit
volunteers and raise funds. Idaho began working on a short deadline
after organizers stepped forward when Sarajevo couldn't host the Games.
The event will be the largest-ever multi-day winter sporting competition
in Idaho.
The games include seven winter sports - alpine skiing, cross-country
skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, snowboarding, snowshoeing and
speed skating.
