The Dalai Lama an honorary citizen of Wroclaw

December 12, 2008 - Warsaw,Poland
The Dalai Lama has received the honorary citizenship of the south-western city of Wroclaw. Speaking during a special meeting of the City Cuncil, its head Barbara Zdrojewska said the Dalai Lama is an unsurpassed example in disseminating the ideas of freedom, peace and tolerance.
The spiritual leader of the Tibetans spoke about the friendly feelings demonstrated by Poles and their support for the cause of free Tibet. On Tuesday, some six thousand young people attended a meeting during which The Dalai Lama spoke about tolerance. He also visited a Jewish synagogue, talked to Carmelite nuns in their convent and had a meeting with the President of Wroclaw.
The Polish capital is the last leg of his tour, which also included Krakow and Gdansk, where the Dalai Lama attended the ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize for Lech Walesa.
Meanwhile, the pro-Tibetan Foundation ‘Other Space’ has appealed to the Warsaw City Council to support the initiative of a group of councillors to name a roundabout after Free Tibet. In its letter to the City Council chairwoman, the Foundation recalls that earlier this year, the Council issued a strong protest against human rights violations in Tibet by the Chinese authorities.
China has protested against the councillor’s motion in a letter sent to the Polish government.
